Swiss Hotel Management School ranked one of the Top 10 hospitality institutions worldwide

The QS Rankings, established in 2004, is viewed as one of the three major education rankings and evaluates 1,110 educational institutions worldwide on key aspects such as academic and employer reputation. For its 2019 edition, QS Rankings surveyed over 83,000 academics and 42,000 employers, making it the largest survey of its type on the opinions of academics globally .

The “Learning by doing” teaching philosophy adapted by SHMS combines the use of latest technologies to deliver academic programmes with hands-on learning in the traditional Swiss hospitality environment. SHMS campuses housed in former Swiss palace hotels are set in idyllic alpine villages of Caux and Leysin and feature lavish banqueting halls, fully equipped spas and a multitude of training restaurants with various cuisine options.

 

 

SHMS has completely moved away from lecture-based to student-centred education process, catering to Generation Z who want to actively shape their own learning experience. Students are encouraged to think creatively and innovatively and take every opportunity they can to better themselves and use technology at the same time: while practicing table service, preparing a themed event for hundreds of guests or rehearsing their employer elevator pitch.

At SHMS, real-life hospitality projects are an integral part of the curricula as they provide an invaluable platform to develop both technical and life skills. One of such examples is Concept Labs, a five-week learning experience of creating and running a functioning pop-up restaurant, from a business plan conception to managing teams, cooking and serving guests. Through this project, students improve their people and business management, problem-solving and decision-making competencies.

 

 

This drive to enhance learning for Generation Z through innovation and creativity earned SHMS the prestigious “Apple Distinguished School” recognition in 2017, an award for centres of educational excellence that demonstrate innovative ways to use technology to support learning goals.
