Managing Director, Co-owner Restaurant “Verkiai” Verkiai Palace, Vilnius, Lithuania, Graduated 1999
Before studying hospitality, I worked as an attaché for tourism in the Lithuanian diplomatic service and as a tour operator in Moscow. Both of these roles gave me an introduction to the hospitality industry and its diversity and dynamic nature. I take pleasure in communicating with people and have the spirit to serve, which makes this the right industry for me and led me to choose to study at SHMS.
At SHMS the most important skills that I learned were to take on challenges and responsibilities and the importance of attention to detail. It also learned a much broader way of thinking.
When I first graduated I went to the USA and did a management training programme with the Marriott group for one year. Following this I returned to Lithuania where I helped to open and then manage the hotel Baltpark in Vilnius. It was a particularly proud moment for me that following this I worked establishing the Baltpark hotel chain in Lithuania, which has now been taken over by the Radisson group. I followed this challenge with a role as Research Director for a hotel chain development programme in the Ukraine. Since 2008 I am the co-owner and manager of the restaurant “Verkiai at the Verkiai Palace in Vilnius where I get to follow my passion for gastronomic cuisine.
My advice to students who are considering studying hospitality is that this is the industry for you if you are willing to dedicate your future to a world of communication, challenges and great traditions.
My professional philosophy is to expect the unexpected – you can manage it!
