BA Degree Programmes

Location
The BA Degree programmes are offered in the SHMS University Centre Campus in Leysin.

Programme Duration
The BA suite provides an attractive range of BA (Hons) Degree programmes. Successful graduates of the Higher Diploma can complete any of the BA top-up programme in 5 months.

Dissertation
After completing the final 5 months Academic term, students will be given 6 weeks to complete their dissertation, during which time supervision will be provided on a distance learning basis. Students have however the option to stay on campus during this six week period.

This module provides the student with the opportunity to work independently on a specific project of a particular interest to them. It is this module, which enables the student to gain an honours degree. The focus is student centred learning with students owning the responsibility to drive the project forward.

Combination option
At SHMS University Centre students can choose to study the following joint BA (Hons) Degrees:

  • Higher Diploma in Hospitality and Events Management
  • Higher Diploma in Hospitality and Travel and Tourism Management

BA (Honours) Hospitality Management
The Hospitality industry has seen an impressive expansion over the last decade and perspectives for the future are even more encouraging. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, 100 million jobs will be created over the next 10 years. The BA (Hons) Hospitality Management programme is aimed at appropriately qualified students wishing to build upon their practical and vocational experiences, through the development of critical and analytical skills. It aims to develop future Hospitality managers and equip them with the skills to manage a rapidly changing environment with confidence. Key features are:

  • Academic, business, management and vocational balance to maximise career development potential;
  • The programme is designed to develop future hospitality leaders;
  • Emphasis placed on research skills and time management;
  • The programme reflects the diverse and dynamic structure of the Hospitality environment.

BA (Honours) Travel & Tourism Management
The tourism industry is now regarded as the world's largest industry, as well as being one of the most diverse. As such the travel and tourism industry provides students with a range of career opportunities in a number of sectors. The BA (Hons) Travel and Tourism Management programme has been developed to meet the ever-changing demands of the Travel and Tourism industry. It provides a thorough grounding in the business and management skills required in Travel and Tourism. It also offers students a Travel and Tourism curriculum that is up to date, vocationally relevant, challenging, and that reflects the complex nature of the Travel and Tourism environment. Key features are:

  • Academic, business, management and vocational balance to maximise career development potential;
  • Specialist teaching staff with experience in different areas of travel and tourism, research and consultancy;
  • The programme is designed to develop the skills necessary for critical thinking and independent decision making, vital for a career in international Tourism management;
  • Emphasis placed on research skills and time management;
  • The programme reflects the diverse and dynamic structure of the Tourism environment.

BA (Honours) Events Management
Events management is a diverse and growing sector, which incorporates the packaging and promotion of conferences, conventions, exhibitions and high profile sports and entertainment events. This programme prepares students for employment in the sector, through consideration of key issues, including advanced project management, security, risk assessment, health and safety and logistics. Key features are:

  • Academic, business, management and vocational balance to maximise career development potential;
  • The programme is designed to develop the skills necessary for critical thinking and independent decision making, vital for a career in international events management;
  • Emphasis placed on research skills and time management;
  • A focus on the issues that face the global events industry both now and in the future.
Progression
Suitably qualified graduates of any BA degree will be eligible for entry into any postgraduate programme offered within the MA suite.
